The gravel road from Brooms Head to Sandon Beach
Almost by accident, on one of our autumn gravel adventures, we ended up discovering a new top notch surf spot to put on our radar and revisit. The Sandon Beach is a little gem tucked away at the end of the 10 kilometers of unsealed road south of Brooms Heads. This may not be an official gravel ride but it’s a bit of a challenge.
Sandon Beach: A little hidden gem
First about the Sandon itself. It’s an undiscovered gem nestled in the Clarence Valley on the Northern New South Wales coast. On an off-the-beaten-path destination, Sandon offers a perfect blend of camping, surfing, and gravel bike riding. Sandon is the epiphany of nature's playground. The campgrounds are nestled among lush bushland with pristine coastline and a top-shelf surf break.
The ride is enough of a challenge
We’ve done some challenging rides in the past, and given this was only a short one, it’s not a huge effort. Still, it’s enough of a challenge to make it feel worthwhile once you hit that sweet beach!

The road is quite tricky with a few four wheel drives that seem to be making their way to the beach, especially on excellent surf days. The beach has four wheel drive access as well so you can see the appeal of those who know about the spot. While the first section of the road is tricky and quite straight, after about a third it gets a little more interesting. There is a bit of winding, some really cool old shacks along the way and decent greenery.
This ride is just a bit different to anything we’ve done before and will be keen to come back and explore some more soon!
